File Administration

This section focuses on commonly used XMIM file administration functions.

Saving, Retrieving, Restarting and Editing Queries

Understanding Files Names

The first time you save your query; you must give it a name and assign it to a location on your drive. Anytime you save a query onto the hard disk of your system, it ends up in a folder (referred to as directories) on your hard disk. Folders are analogous to the file drawers and file folders you use in your office to help you organize and locate your paper files. You can locate files (referred to as queries) more easily if you store related files together in a folder. For example, you could store all queries that relate to research on economic releases in a folder named economic_releases.

Saving Your Query

The first time you save a query, you must assign it a file name and decide in which folder you want to store it. To save a query simply select the Save icon from the toolbar or select File> Save from the menu bar. Upon selection, a Save window will appear.

After you have saved a file for the first time, you can save it again with the same file name, or you can save it as a new file with a different file name by selecting File>Save As from the menu bar.

Retrieving Your Saved Files

To retrieve your saved query, select either the Open icon from the toolbar or select File>Open from the menu bar. Upon selection, an Open window will appear.

XMIM provides certain familiar editing tools to refashion your query. These editing tools, may be selected either in the toolbar ( )or under the Edit menu.

Toggle Comments

You can comment out entries in your query. In the Edit window click in the text that you want to comment out then select Edit># Toggle Comment from the menu bar or right-click and select # Toggle Comment. A # is placed in front of the text and the line will be commented out (ignored). You can also use the short-cut key Ctrl+K to comment out text. These same methods will also remove the comments.

Replace

Select Edit>Replace from the menu bar to open the Replace window where you can find and replace values. Enter the value you want to find and replace in the Replace field. Enter the value you want to put in its place in the With field.

Select Edit>Check and Format from the menu bar to check the syntax of the query and reformat the query indents.

Saving Temporary Revisions with Local History

Temporary versions of query edits are saved in the View Local History Revisions window accessible from Tools>Local History in the XMIM menu bar.

Here's how it works. Make changes to your query then process the query by running a Report or Chart. At this point, a temporary version is saved in the Local History window. To view the temporary saved versions, select Tools>Local History from the XMIM menu bar. In the View Local History Revisions window select a query using the date and time stamp. View the contents of the query in the Revision Content pane. When you find the query version you want, select the Restore button to restore the query in the XMIM Edit window.

See the section called “Local History Revisions Pane” for details on specifying the size of the local history directory. You can specify how large the local history directory can get before files are removed from the directory.
